Have you ever wanted to throw caution to the wind and live in a foreign land? To journey not only to the other side of the world, but also deep within yourself? Or perhaps you’ve read about such a journey of self-discovery and thought, ‘This is total horsepoop!’

Memoirs of a Douchebag chronicles the adventures of John Box as he spends a year traveling around Japan, teaching English, and discovering himself—nightly.

Through this life-changing journey, John comes to such revelations as he hates working, and kids, and food that makes liver spots drenched in mucous seem like crème brulee.

Further, through this inter-cultural experience, John learns some important life-lessons like how different Japanese are from Americans…and how similar. Fucking mind-blowing shit. Plus, he’ll feel you up!

Buy now and begin reading a hilarious parody of journeys of self-discovery.

No hyperbole: This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. I laughed from beginning to end. I laughed before I even began at some of the blurbs describing the book and had to tell a few of them to one of my friends before I began reading in earnest.

This is an account of John Box's first year teaching in Japan. It's a comedy of errors, manners and cultural differences in which Mr. Box plays a typical American, an atypical American, a victim, a bully, and pretty much everything in-between. No matter what he was doing or attempting to do, he writes about it with a sarcastic panache that is laugh out loud funny. No matter how unnerved he is with the craziness he encounters, he doesn't let it cramp his style.

When he isn't teaching children English (which has its hilarious moments) he uses his time in Japan to experience a variety of what the country has to offer: Kabuki, temple and bar hopping, dating Japanese girls, learning Aikido, Calligraphy, festivals-both cultural and music, pretending to be Billie Joe of Green Day (and pulling it off), becoming a pseudo minister who marries couples in both Japanese and English, snowboarding on the Japanese Alps and so much more, all while drinking as much as possible. He does some deep soul searching as to why he is in Japan. This is a repetitive theme he revisits every couple of pages, coming up with a new and better reason than the last.

You don't have to be interested in Japan or teaching to find this amusing. It's the journey of a 20 something in a foreign culture trying to have a good time as he bumbles his way to enlightenment. I think we've all been there in the metaphysical sense. Few could recount it as entertainingly as Box-san has done.

I urge you to get a copy and discover this fairly unknown, but truly gifted, writer.

I purchased the book and it's well worth it. How fortunate that John Box chose to share his memoirs, for it would have been shameful to keep them a SECRET. This guy is talented, creative and hilarious.
